The first quiet morning of a louder season
The light reached the room before anything else did.
A thin line appeared beside the curtain, pale enough that I could still pretend the morning had not properly begun. My phone was face down. The glass on the bedside table was half full. Somewhere outside, a car passed and then another, but the room remained almost perfectly still.
For a few minutes, September had not found me yet.
There is something particular about the first morning when a season begins to feel louder.
Not dramatic. Nothing announces itself.
The alarm is simply a little earlier. The calendar looks a little less generous. Messages seem to arrive before you have decided what sort of morning you are having.
You can feel the pace returning before you are fully inside it.
I stayed in bed for another minute.
The silk pillowcase beneath my cheek was cool where I had not touched it and warmer where I had slept. The fabric over my eyes had shifted slightly in the night and was now resting beside me, folded into itself.
Neither asked anything.
That felt important.
There are so many moments in a full life that immediately become preparation for the next one. You wake and begin thinking about leaving. You drink coffee while answering something. You stand in one room while mentally occupying another.
But this morning had not become useful yet.
It was simply morning.
The sheets were imperfectly folded around me. Light moved slowly across the wall. My hair was still carrying the shape of sleep.
Perhaps the quietest forms of care are the ones that do not need to interrupt us to make themselves known.
A smooth surface beneath the face. A little darkness held over closed eyes. Something soft enough to disappear until the moment you notice how it has made the beginning of the day feel.
The louder season will arrive. In many ways, it already has.
There will be earlier mornings and fuller afternoons. Things to remember, places to be, messages that cannot remain unanswered forever.
I do not need this morning to protect me from any of that.
I only want to notice that it existed before I move on.
The light is brighter now.
The room no longer feels quite as private.
September is arriving.
And this morning, at least, was still mine.
