Slower mornings, on purpose

Folded silk scarf with a botanical print lying on a stone side table next to a cup of coffee.

This morning, I finished my coffee before I picked up my phone.

The cup was still warm between my hands. Light had reached the table, catching the edge of a small dish and the silk scarf I had left beside it the night before.

There was nowhere unusual to go.

The day ahead was full in all the familiar ways.

Still, I let the coffee remain the only thing happening for a few minutes.

A slower morning does not necessarily require more time.

Sometimes it is simply the feeling of not giving every minute away before it has properly arrived.

Later, standing in front of the mirror, I picked up the petit carré.

The silk moved easily through my fingers, light enough to shift with the smallest movement. I folded it once, changed my mind, and let it open again.

There was something pleasing about not hurrying the decision.

Not because it mattered terribly how the silk scarf was worn.

Because taking one small thing slowly seemed to change the quality of the minutes around it.

A silk scarf with a soft beige and pale pink damask pattern is draped on a sunlit bed next to a cup of coffee and a book.

By this point in September, the season is fully in motion.

The mornings know what they are for again. There is a familiar rhythm to leaving the house, answering, arriving, remembering.

I do not always want that rhythm to decide mine.

There is a kind of discipline in keeping a little of your own tempo when the day has already proposed another one.

From the outside, it may look like almost nothing.

Finishing the coffee while it is still hot.

Letting the room remain quiet another minute.

Choosing something by feel rather than speed.

Looping a silk scrunchie around the wrist and leaving the house without turning the morning into a performance.

None of these things make a full day less full.

That is not the point.

They simply remind me that moving with intention and getting things done are not opposites.

There is a difference between being slow and being present enough to decide your own speed.

The petit carré sat lightly against me as I left, shifting whenever I moved.

Outside, the day was already gathering itself.

There were places to go.

Things to answer.

A pace waiting for me.

For once, it could keep mine.
