The body knows before I do
It is late. The lamp is on, the book is open to the page I will not finish. I lie back and something in the shoulders lets go — not because I told it to, but because the pillow was there, and the room was dim, and the silk was cool under the side of my face.
My mind is still working. It is listing tomorrow. It has not agreed that the day is over.
The body does not wait for it to agree.
For a long time I thought of rest as something I had to argue for. A case to be made at the end of the week. Evidence of enough done. Permission, granted late and reluctantly, usually by me.
I do not think that any more.
People sometimes ask me about the benefits of a silk pillowcase, and I never quite know where to begin, because the truest answer is not a list. It is this: the body reads a good surface before the mind has read anything at all. The cool of it. The way it does not pull at the hair or hold the heat. The way the face rests on it and is not asked to do anything.
The body takes that in and makes a decision. The decision is rest. The mind catches up later, or it does not, and either way it hardly matters.
This is what I have come to think of as the intelligence of rest. Not a reward. A reading.
A settled room says something before you have had time to think it. The curtain drawn. The glass of water on the side. The sheet pulled back. These are not treats. They are information, and the body is very good at reading it.
So I have stopped waiting for the mind to be convinced. I set the room. I make the bed in the morning without thinking about it. I lie down on silk because the body answers to it, immediately, every time — and because I have noticed that the nights when I let the body decide first are the nights I actually sleep.
Dubai is softer this week. The evenings have a little more room in them. My daughter has started asking for the balcony door to be opened after dinner, and I have started saying yes.
It is a good season for letting the body go first.
If you would like a surface the body can read, the pillowcase is where I would begin. Make it yours, in whatever hour you have.
There is one more thing I want to say, quietly, and only to those who will know what I mean. Some of us are resting this month because we have been asked to, not because we chose it. The room does not ask why. The pillow does not ask. If you are one of those people, the silk holds you too. It was always going to.
If you are ready to let the body go first, begin with what touches it — discover the silk pillowcase and make a little more room for rest.
